But it wasn’t all bad…I did, for example, buy a copy of this for a dollar, and now I have even more big ol’ nutty Jack Kirby pages in my home to enjoy. The best part of reading this comic thus far is the captions…it’s like the exact opposite in tone from the movie:
…explicitly explaining everything you just had to sorta figure out yourself while watching the flick. Not that parts of 2001 were all that crazy hard to understand, but still, it feels weird having it all spelled out for you.

Oh man, you are so right about the captions. The best part is while HAL 9000 being lobotomized by Dave Bowman, it is SCREAMING FOR ITS LIFE IN ALL-BOLD CAPS!!!
I have the 2001 series Kirby did. The stories are interesting, but the LONG OVEREXPLANATORY CAPTIONS get tedious.
To be fair, I have the same complaint with anything written by Stan Lee.
A lot of Marvel writers, Doug Moench comes to mind, did the same thing: spelling out what the art clearly shows. But at least Kirby did it with more flair and BOLD LETTERS and lots of exclamation points!!!!! and “quotation marks”!!!
Captions come more or less right out of the novel, IIRC. Which is why the movie is great & the book is just okay
