First thing: all the comics (or at least as many as can be identified) that appeared on the rack in that one scene in RoboCop (1987).

Second thing: someone stole stuff from Mark Evanier, including a couple classic pieces of original Dave Stevens art, which Mark talks about here, including where to report it should you happen to see them out for sale somewhere.

Third thing: the video trailer for this week’s Mad About DC comic book, starring Chip Zdarsky as the Flash.

  1. 1. Whoever made the comics order for that convenience store was really into Iron Man and Dazzler.

    2. Well, that makes me mad. I’m glad they at least know who did it. I hope Mr. Evanier gets his property back very soon.

    3. My favorite part is when the police detective gets upset about Zdarsky’s Batman run.

  2. Wow, you’d think they’d all be from roughly the same couple of months, but they span years. I particularly like how The Flash and Richard Dragon Kung-Fu Fighter from the mid 70’s DC are just thrown in with a bunch of 80’s Marvel!

  3. Guess those were back issues considering Robocop is supposed to take place anywhere from 1997 to 2044 depending on who you believe.

  4. It’s like with videos. Just get X amount of props. Someone could have just bought a bunch (or been given) from a dollar bin.

    Years ago, I gave Mike a post that flew right on by, but THE NAKED CITY was shot in Real Time on NYC streets. While investigating the death of Burgess Meredith, detectives asking a guy with a newspaper kiosk if he saw the murder happen–again, no actual extras or fake sets–and we see AMAZING FANTASY#16 then the guy moves and there is a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY. A few other titles, but it was hard to see if they were same month since kiosks were allowed to sell until the month on the comic cover ended.

    And I’m not proud of it, but the owner of the shop I worked in had me close for an hour, run three blocks to Venture, buy all their Robin#1s. The Tim Drake character but not the issues with the trading cards.

    I did, and we sold them, maybe thirty copies. But I only did it on the promise that he would only mark them up by a quarter. So someone at Marvel could have purposefully given issues to be used in that kiosk.

    Tl;dr: quarter bin issues.

    Mike: do you say bin or box? I grew up with bin.

  5. Like, I know a lot of robbers aren’t smart but….you can’t steal from the house you’re doing construction work on and get away with it; they’ll KNOW IT WAS YOU. And they’ve seen your face, and might even know your name!

  8. @Andrew: Mike actually has a post of this from maybe 2016. Seemed to fall flat with comments, but 2016 the Cubs won the World Series so our world was changing.

    I only remember this because, numbnuts that I am, I sent the exact same shots–not yours, mine from the MeTV episode–to Mike a few years back.
    I will say to those who want an example of fantastic writing and acting, the episode is called “Please Hold for Gloria Christmas”.

  9. I should add that my captures have the kiosk owner talking with the detectives. It would be interesting to see if that guy was an actor or just an extra, the comics being Marvel props, the extra maybe working for Marvel.
